EQUIPMENT All walkers are to supply their own food, cooking utensils, sleeping bags, personal gear, cook their own meals & help to keep the huts clean & tidy. Please allow the minimum of 4 days to walk the Milford Track. A reasonable amount of fitness is required to walk the 12-20kms per day. Weather in the Fiordland region is notoriously unpredictable. Heavy rain, driving wind and snow can occur at any time of the year, including summer. Rapid temperature drops mean that hypothermia (exposure) can set in very quickly. Fording floodwaters up to a metre (3 feet) deep may be necessary after heavy rain. Warm woolen or polypropylene clothing is essential. ACCOMMODATION Accommodation in the three Department of Conservation huts provide gas for cooking, lighting, cold running water, toilets and communal bunkrooms beds and mattresses. There are no showers available at the huts. There are flush toilets, hand basins & basins to wash in. No soap or shampoo is allowed to be used in the lakes or rivers along the track, as a build up of residue can be damaging to the environment. Conservation Staff are in residence at each of the huts and have radio telephone access for weather updates and in cases of emergency. TRAVEL AND ACCOMMODATION OPTIONS If travelling within New Zealand, we would suggest you have Travelpass giving you travel on InterCity Coachlines, Newmans Coachlines, Tranz Scenic Rail Services & Interislander Ferry Services. Optional flight sectors on Air New Zealand National and Link services are also available with Travelpass. Travelpass can be "Open" dated for any travel sectors. With regards to accommodation, if you are interested in back packing, for NZ$30 you purchase the VIP Backpackers Card which gives discounts on accommodation and attractions throughout New Zealand, Australia, etc. If you want to see New Zealand by hiring a rental car, there is a range of rental car operators that are available. If you want to see New Zealand by bus, InterCity Coachlines and Newmans Coachlines have an extensive nationwide network. Prices are for guidance only and are subject to confirmation.
